Running Calorie Formula

Calories = MET × Weight(kg) × Duration(hours)

MET by speed: 5 mph=8.3 | 6 mph=9.8 | 7 mph=11.0 | 8 mph=11.8 | 9 mph=12.8

Running burns ~2–3× more calories than walking at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does running speed significantly change calorie burn?
Yes — faster running has a higher MET value, but you also cover more distance per minute. Per mile, the difference is smaller than per minute. Running a mile at any speed burns roughly 100 calories for a 155 lb person.
Does running on a treadmill burn the same calories as outdoors?
Very similar. Outdoor running may burn slightly more due to wind resistance and terrain variation. Set treadmill to 1% incline to roughly match outdoor running energy cost.
